What Does a Missed Call Actually Cost a Home Service Business?

A missed call is usually a lost customer, not a voicemail. Here is the simple math to work out what yours cost, using your own numbers.

What does a missed call cost?

There is no single dollar figure, because the value of a call varies by trade by more than an order of magnitude. The honest way to size it is a formula you run on your own numbers: average job value, times the share of callers who become customers, times the calls you miss in a month.

How many calls do home service businesses miss?

More than one in four. Across home service businesses, roughly 27% of inbound calls go unanswered. Most owners guess lower, because a missed call leaves no trace in the places they look. It is not in the inbox, not on the calendar, and usually not in voicemail either.

Do people leave a voicemail when nobody picks up?

Mostly not. About 85% of callers pushed to voicemail leave no message. The rest hang up, and in a trade where several companies are one search away, hanging up usually means calling the next name on the list. A missed call is not a delayed conversation. It is a lost one.

The formula, worked through

Take a business with a $400 average job, where roughly one in three callers becomes a customer, missing 30 calls a month:

$400 average job x 0.33 conversion x 30 missed calls = about $4,000 a month.

The numbers change per trade. The method does not. Two adjustments make it honest: exclude the calls that were never going to buy, and if your work is seasonal, run it separately for a busy month and a quiet one, because an annual average hides the months that actually matter.

Why does answering speed matter so much?

Because the customer is usually calling several companies, and the order they get answered in decides the outcome more than anything on your website. Harvard Business Review found firms that respond within an hour are far more likely to qualify the lead than those that wait. Speed is the cheapest advantage in home services, and the phone is where it is won or lost.

What can you actually do about it?

Answer every call, including the ones outside business hours and during the seasonal rush when your crew is busiest. That does not have to mean hiring a night receptionist. An AI receptionist picks up in under a second, qualifies the caller, books the job or pages your on-call tech, and never sends anyone to voicemail.

Most missed calls arrive when nobody is at the desk, which is covered in how to stop losing after-hours calls. If you are weighing your options, an AI receptionist and a traditional answering service solve different problems, and there is an honest look at where AI answering works and where it still fails.
