You Pay Up to $90 for a Lead. Then the Phone Rings.

Home services search leads cost $45 to $90 or more, and roughly a quarter of inbound calls go unanswered. Here is what that does to your marketing budget.

What does a home services lead actually cost?

More than most owners think. A LocaliQ analysis of 3,211 US home services search campaigns put the average cost per lead at about $91. By trade: roughly $45 for HVAC, $52 for plumbing, and $79 for roofing, with plenty of markets running higher.

That is the price of making your phone ring once. Everything in this article follows from taking that number seriously.

What happens to the leads you pay for?

Industry call data puts roughly 27% of inbound calls to home services businesses in the unanswered column, and that average includes plenty of owners who are certain they answer everything. The ad platforms do not care whether you pick up. You paid for the click and the call either way.

So the honest way to read your marketing spend is this: for every four calls your ads generate, one lands on a phone nobody answers. The ad worked. The phone did not.

Do missed callers try again?

Mostly, no. Industry research shows 85% of callers who do not get an answer never call back. They are not being spiteful; they just have a leak and a list, and the next company on it answered. By the time anyone returns the call, the work is usually already on somebody else's schedule.

Which means a missed call is not a lead you will convert later. It is a lead you already bought for a competitor.

The arithmetic of the leak

Run it on a modest example, using your own numbers in place of these. Say your ads generate 60 calls a month at $75 each: $4,500 in spend. A 27% miss rate means about 16 of those calls go unanswered, which is roughly $1,200 of paid leads reaching dead air, month after month.

Notice what that figure leaves out. It counts only the wasted ad spend, not the value of the jobs those callers would have booked, which is usually several times larger. That bigger number is its own arithmetic, and it is worth running before you decide the leak is tolerable.

Why fixing the phone beats raising the budget

When lead flow feels thin, the reflex is to spend more on marketing. But if a quarter of calls go unanswered, more budget pours more water through the same hole, at $45 to $90 a bucket.

Fixing answer rate is the only marketing improvement that makes every OTHER channel more efficient at the same time: search ads, local services ads, the website, referrals. All of them terminate at the same phone. Answer it every time and the cost per booked job drops across the board without changing a single campaign.

What answering every call takes

Nights, weekends, and the busy season are where the misses concentrate, and staffing a desk for all of them is its own payroll problem. That is the gap an AI receptionist closes: it picks up in under a second at any hour, qualifies the caller, books the job, and routes real emergencies to your on-call tech. The after-hours problem has its own playbook, and if you are weighing the options, here is how an AI receptionist differs from an answering service.
