What is speed to lead?
Speed to lead is the time between a customer reaching out and your business actually responding. In home services it is usually measured from the moment the phone rings, and it predicts whether you win the job better than almost anything else you can control.

How much does speed actually matter?
More than almost anything else you control. Two separate studies, one from MIT and one published in Harvard Business Review, measured how fast companies respond to new leads and what the delay cost them. Both found the same shape: the odds of winning the lead collapse inside the first hour.
The MIT lead response study found calling a lead back within 5 minutes makes you 21 times more likely to qualify them than waiting just 30 minutes. Not 21 percent more likely. Twenty-one times.
Harvard Business Review found companies that respond within an hour are 7 times more likely to qualify the lead than those that wait longer. The same audit found the average business takes 42 hours to respond. Two days, for a customer who made up their mind in minutes.
Why is speed so decisive in home services specifically?
Because the caller has a problem, not a project. A homeowner with a flooded basement or a dead air conditioner is not gathering quotes for a spreadsheet. They search, they get a list, and they call down it in order until a company answers.
Whoever picks up first gets the chance to book the job, and studies show 78% of customers buy from the business that responds first.
That is the difference between home services and almost every other industry: the buying decision often finishes inside the first phone call. Being second is usually the same as being last.
Why are most businesses slow?
